YouTube is the most popular platform to share videos. Six years ago, YouTube opened their partner program to everyone. This was an advantage for anyone who wanted to upload videos in YouTube. Anyone could easily undergo monetization of his/her videos without meeting any terms and start earning money by placing ads on the videos.
YouTube always focuses on providing good content across the web and encourages YouTubers who are really hard working. YouTube has to gain advertisers trust for many reasons. Most of the advertisers found their ads appearing in the videos of channels which were spamming content. There was no point in placing the promotional ads in such videos. YouTube also noticed that the genuine channels are not getting paid for what they are doing and the low-level channels are uploading spam videos or copying other’s videos to earn after monetization.
Due to this, back in April of 2017, YouTube Partner Program(YPP) eligibility was set. Any new YouTube channel required 10,000-lifetime views to get the videos monetized. The number spammers were highly reduced but still, YouTube had to know whether the channel followed the community guidelines or not. YouTube needed a higher standard to gain the trust of the advertisers.

Starting from today, 17th of January 2018, YouTube has changed the eligibility of YPP to 4000 hours of watch time within past 12 months and 1000 subscribers. YouTube had to arrive at this threshold after consulting with many YouTubers. YouTube wants to motivate the good actors by providing them more revenue and suggests the bad actors for focusing on quality content and increase the audience in the channel. From today, this rule should be regulated by any new YouTuber who wants to monetize his/her content.
Criteria for old YouTubers
The threshold will also be implemented to the old YouTubers from 20th of February,2018. 1 month of time has been provided to them to increase the number of audiences and watch time. The existing YouTubers have also reach 1000 subscribers and watch time of 4000 hours. If they do not meet these criteria, they will be restricted from monetizing their content. Once they meet the threshold, the channel will automatically be approved for monetization.
Also, it has been stated that YouTube will strictly check the channels and remove the channels that violate the community guidelines. The channel posting spam and other abusive contents repeatedly will be removed after three community guidelines strikes are issued.
It is sure that quality content will be increased and the passionate YouTubers will be awarded more revenue. The new policy may not be liked by many new YouTubers. But once they reach the threshold by their hard work, they will achieve their goals and become happier. Hence, the new rules made by YouTube may affect many small YouTubers but the quality content across YouTube will surely increase in the coming days.
